It’s the expertly-laid waterworks that leaves our users thinking “wow! it just works!” — you’ll be the master of illusions, helping maintain the canals and aqueducts of data that keep Transit nimble.

As a backend services developer, you’ll help the Data Infrastructure team expand and improve the services that our users rely on. Handling location updates that improve the accuracy of real-time bus and train positions? Collating/sending notifications about real-time trip updates, service alerts, app updates, and more? Fun stuff, like emoji management for Transit profiles (and being the token-touting gamemaster for GO crowdsourcing points)? Scaling up these services so they can handle our ever-increasing family of users? Yes, yes, yes, say yes to me, yes!

Most of our services are implemented in Typescript running on Google Cloud’s Kubernetes Engine or Cloud Run, aka you’ll be working with a modern deployment environment — one we’re constantly refining and improving.

Backend services developer

Say it takes 650 seconds to walk to your bus stop. Now, imagine leaving your house 649 seconds before your bus “should” arrive. You walk your normal pace, you turn the last corner, and just as you reach the stop—your bus pulls in.

It sounds amazing. Unlikely. Too good to be true. But thanks to our real-time data engineers, we’re closer than ever. Transit supports vehicle tracking in all major cities: we pull real-time data from agency servers, add some special sauce, then share those departure times with millions of riders. Will they have time for one more cup of coffee? Or will they have to sprint to the stop?

That’s for you to say: you’ll be unifying messy APIs, extracting relevant data, and linking it together with our static transit info. You’ll be scaling and refining our in-house prediction tools and algorithms. You’ll be merging agency real-time with crowdsourced data from millions of users. The fruits of your labour? Reliable real-time, no missed trips, and millions of happy riders. The extra coffee probably helped ;)

- Merge hundreds of third-party APIs in various formats (some clean as a whistle, others plain nasty) into a single, scalable, elegant API

- Develop strategies and tools that allow multiple sets of data to be cross-matched and merged if necessary

- Build services that scale efficiently with fluctuations of the data

- Process vehicle location data in real time in order to warn users when there is a detour on their trip

Backend developer (TypeScript/Python)

APIs are like opinions. Everybody’s got one. But when you manage hundreds of different mobility APIs, you don’t want a chorus of conflicting opinions. You want the nice, smooth conformity of a (checks notes) benevolent dictatorship. Whether it’s a transit agency API, or one provided by a carshare/bikeshare/scooter/ridehail operator, it’ll be your job to work with those disparate sources—however messy they might be!—find the relevant endpoints, and make sure they’re all speaking the same language: ours.

You’ll be adding deep partner integrations. Ones that let Transit riders unlock a shared bike or scooter, book a carshare vehicle, hail a ride, compare prices and ETAs between operators, and pay/sign-up for the aforementioned services. (Yes, madame! All within one app.) You’ll also help us make it less cumbersome to purchase transit tickets: we’re adding mobile ticketing for multiple transit agencies, and you’ll be that project’s overseer.

What to expect? This job is ~20% back end, ~80% front end. “Back end” is codeword for creating consistency out of chaos, making sure every rider can expect a reliable experience when they go to a different Transit city, or try a different mode. “Front end” is codeword for breathless simplicity, sweating the details to ensure Transit isn’t just one place you can procure different modes of transport — it’s your default, because we make it so dang easy.

- Creating a new bikeshare, ridehail, scooter, or ticketing integration.
